The Generation Forest Panama Update

One of the important aspects of CardanoCafe is its commitment to supporting charitable organizations that positively impact our planet's ecology. One of the most dynamic organizations we support is The Generation Forest project in Panama. Here is an update on the activity there.

The Generation Forest Project Mission

The Generation Forest project in Panama is deeply comitted to biodiversity as the proper model for ecological sustainability. The following two paragraphs summarize their philosophy and intentions:

"The generation forest is a forestry model that was developed to help create a forest that provides for the needs of humanity as well as the environment. What makes it unique among other reforestation projects is that the forests are not clear-cut as they are in plantations. Instead of a monoculture, we plant a healthy mixture of different native tree species to create a dynamic ecosystem. Young and old trees are cultivated alongside one another in a permanent system.
Our forests actively contribute to the holistic recovery of nature by countering global deforestation with new resilient forests, compensating for CO₂ in the long term, and providing a home for many species. Thus, our reforestations are not only a solution against global warming, but at the same time contribute significantly to the preservation of the biodiversity of our planet. Because flora and fauna also plays an elementary role in the fight against climate change through their contribution to the preservation of resilient ecosystems. Only when climate protection and species conservation are considered together in holistic solutions can we effectively counteract climate change."

Important Facts About TGF

The cooperative has more than 6,800 members. Over 2,000 hectares of land in Panama have been acquired and protected. This equals 4,940 acres which when fully reforested will store an average of 40,000 metric tons of CO2 annually for the next 100 years. At that rate in 100 years this area of reforested land will store 4,000,000 metric tons of CO2. For some perspective on these number bear in mind that the average automobile emits about 4.6 metric tons of Cardon Dioxide per year.

Current Activity

The planting season started in early June, and TGF plans to reforest at least 500 hectares (1,235 acres) in the next 3 months. The climate phenomenon known as El Nino is impacting Panama this year, and there will be much less rain than there normally is. This does change TGFs reforestation plans. They have enough land in areas with sufficient rain and are well prepared. TGF is optimistic that they will acheive their at least minimal goal of reforesting 500 hectares this year.

Website and Newsletter

TGFs website offers opportunities to sign up for their newsletter and to join their efforts by becoming a contributing member. You can also order a free brochure that has compelling photographs and highly relevant information backed up with specific data. As a member of Cafe I am inspired by the comittment Chris has made to TGF. This real world support for sustainability is critical for all of us.

The Generation Forest plants Forests, not Trees!

In the last update, we informed you that The Generation Forest planted over 381000 trees last year and about the different species the cooperative uses to create biodiverse forests. The statement “planting forests, not trees” seems strange, but the underlying logic is very valuable and distinguishes The Generation Forest from many reforestation projects.

Reforestation Update of The Generation Forest

Last year's planting season was strongly influenced by the El Nino phenomenon. The phenomenon causes that Panama is significantly drier than normal. However, TGF's forestry partner was able to plant a good mix with their forestry concept and experience with different tree species.

TGF announces start of season for new reforestations

Finally the time has come in Panama: the annual dry season is over. Instead of freezing cold, the trees there "hibernate" in scorching heat and little rain. Similar to the temperate latitudes, in Panama the trees lose their leaves and reduce their biological activity. With the end of the dry season, the planting season will begin again.
